Munich and Dachau

Hello! Haven't updated the blog in a month. So here we go!

We had the chance to go to Munich, Germany with our friends Aaron and Kristyn Boyd! They invited us to come to a concert they had planned, so we packed our bags for the weekend and had quite the road trip:)

We stopped in this cool town on the way. Honestly, I can't remember what it was called, but we loved the atmosphere....minus the rain. Awesome architecture, clocks, and yummy Thai food for lunch!

Beautiful Architecture

 We arrived in Munich that evening and checked into our hotel, and then headed back into the rain to find some dinner. We found this yummy burger place, where I enjoyed a delicious Teriaki Burger, gluten-free of course;) We were all pretty tired, which made for an entertaining tram ride back to the hotel! We were pretty loopy and everything was making us laugh!

The next morning we went to church and then walked around Munich. Amazing city! Gorgeous architecture, great park (where we watched surfing in the river!!!!), and great museums. We walked the city, talked, relaxed on the lawn, and got some bratwursts:) We then tried to find a restaurant that served typical Bavarian cuisine. This was actually pretty funny. We found a restaurant that was packed with people. Good sign right? Lots of people? Way misleading. The waitress was NOT happy to serve us, was way cranky, and said they were out of most of the things we wanted on the menu. We did try pork knuckle for the first time! Not the best experience, but we laughed after!

 The next morning, we had some yummy breakfast and then went to the Dachau Concentration Camp. This has always been on my bucket list. Andrew and I are kind of WWII junkies, and with all the reading we have done, we really wanted to see this. We had never been to a concentration camp. We have read countless stories, accounts and journal entries about the atrocities that took place at these camps. We fortunately had audio guides, and got to hear the historical facts of each part of the camp. We started our tour with a film, which gave a brief history of Dachau. We didn't realize that it was a model for all the other camps that were created during the Nazi Regime. It was sobering to see video footage of the victims that were brutally beaten, mocked and tortured.

"Work Makes You Free." Irony.

 They have done a thorough job of including records, journal accounts, and explanations of every part of the camp.  It is remarkable that anyone even survived after such brutalities.   It was an experience we will never forget. We are so glad that we had this opportunity.
